Left to Right: Tim, Walter, standing on the Atlantic City Boardwalk after the 2005 Race Across America. Every year Walter rides unsupported for hundreds of miles to arrive at the RAAM finish line in time to see the winning recumbent team finish. I hope to see him there again in 2007.
Tim Woudenberg started doing double centuries in 1998 and awoke from the couch potato state he had been in for most of his life. Upon losing 75lbs, he discovered speed and ultra distance racing. In 2003 he finished Paris-Brest-Paris in 72 hours. and Furnace Creek 508 in 33:26. In 2004 he was introduced to the world of recumbents and HPV's by Jim Kern and was part of the four man HPV team (Team ALS Lightning) to finish RAAM first overall in 5 days 7 hours, shattering a RAAM record for most miles in 24 hours, twice, on consecutive days. In 2005 Tim completed his first 9.5 mile time trial in just over 21 minutes and set a course record. He also set a course record on the Davis 24 hr. Challenge. He again competed in RAAM, this time in a four man recumbent team (Team ALS Bacchetta). They finished in 6 days 3 hours, third place overall and first place in category, becoming the first four man recumbent team ever to finish RAAM. Tim finished off the season with the Gold Rush Randonee (1200km) in under 60 hours and also completed the FC 508, finishing first place in category. In 2006 Tim set four course records at Davis 24hr, RAAM, RAO, and FC508. In the case of RAAM and RAO, Tim was a member of a two man recumbent team with Tom Kingsbury and John Schlitter as partners respectively. In 2007 Tim plans to compete in Sebring 24hr, Davis 24hr, RAAM, PBP, etc.
“The best motivations come from the trust and friendships I have formed with my team mates, crew and even competitors. The winning is only a by-product.”
